You have heard of Online Banking. Does your bank offer this facility? Are you taking advantage of the online banking through Internet? Well, it's time to look at what options you have and what benefits you can reap from this e-facility.

What is Online Banking?

Like the idea of managing your bank accounts, paying all kind of bills online? Forget about going to the bank, press button for a queue number, sit (worse still, stand in the queue) and wait for your turn. The idea of online banking is just taking the advantage of the interconnected infrastructure (in this case, the Internet), which connects you (through your computer in your house, office or anywhere) to your bank. With a proper secure authentication process, you are connected to your bank and you may choose the various transaction like balance inquiry, fund transfer, bill payments, loan applications and even stock or mutual fund trading. Generally, these service are offered to customers for free although some banks may charge a minimal fees for each transaction. 

What is the benefit of Online Banking?

Convenient and Flexibility. You can do the banking from your computer anywhere, anytime. Most of the bills (eg.: Electricity bill, phone bills, water bill, credit card payment & others) can be paid using online banking. 

Is it safe to use Online Banking?

This is a real concern as we heard of many "hacking" cases in the cyberspace. Well, a proper security features & authentication process, online banking can be safe. The general security features for online banking services are:
 
1. Strong Encryption (128-bit)
    This will make sure all data sent to and from the bank is "scrambled" and "reassembled" between the bank and your personal computer to protect your personal and financial information. 

2. Personal Identification
Number (PIN)
   
You will be given a PIN and this PIN must be entered every time you log on.

3. Automatic Time Out
   
When there is no activity for a preset time (eg. 5 minutes), the bank's computer will terminate your session to help protect against unauthorized access.
